The Norte Chico, this region, well known by its beaches of white sands and pristine warm waters, offers a great variety of tourist attractions.
Its regional capital is La Serena, the second oldest city of the country. La Serena offers to the visitor a neon-colonial architectonic style, a traditional market, an archaeological Museum.
Nearby the port of Coquimbo is a place of a rich history and tradition, mainly because of the numerous legends of pirates, and it also has a charming colorful market.
Due to the clear and pure skies and the privileged climate of this region, some of the world’s most sophisticated astronomical observatories have been erected in the area.
Not far from La Serena, and surrounded by the Andes range it is located the beautiful Elqui Valley, rich in history and birth place of the poet Gabriela Mistral, who received the Nobel Prize.
The Elqui valley offers the best climate for vineyards, whose grapes are used to make the best pisco, the Chilean national drink.
On this same valley, the Mamalluca Observatory let visitors to discover the magic of stars, galaxies and constellations.
North from La Serena, there is a natural reservoir “Isla Damas” which is the habitat for the Humboldt Penguin, and home of the rich marine fauna of the region. And just some kilometers to the South, the National Park “Fray Jorge”, a world reserve of the biosphere, delights the visitor with extraordinary evergreen woods.
